Single Origin vs Blend: What's the Difference?
Hillbilly Coffee RoastersIt's one of the most common questions in specialty coffee: should I buy a blend or a single origin? The answer depends on how you brew, how you drink and what you're looking for in your cup. Here's what you need to know.
What Is a Coffee Blend?
A coffee blend combines beans from two or more origins. The goal is consistency and balance — a roaster blends specific origins to create a flavour profile that holds up across different brewing conditions, stays consistent from batch to batch and works well with milk.
Blends are the workhorse of the espresso world. They're designed to produce reliable, balanced shots and perform predictably when pulled through an espresso machine. If you drink flat whites, cappuccinos or lattes, a well-crafted espresso blend will serve you better than a single origin in most cases.
Hillbilly Coffee Roasters' espresso blends are crafted from Brazilian, Colombian, Ethiopian, Guatemalan, Honduran and Rwandan origins, each combination developed to deliver a specific character — whether that's the dark chocolate depth of the Purgatory Blend or the hazelnut sweetness of the Psychobilly.
What Is a Single Origin Coffee?
Single origin coffee comes from one specific farm, estate, co-operative or region. It's the coffee equivalent of a single malt whisky — nothing blended in, nothing averaged out.
What makes single origin interesting is what makes it variable: you're tasting the terroir of one place. Altitude, soil, microclimate, processing method and variety all contribute to a flavour profile that no other origin can replicate. Ethiopian coffees are famous for their berry and floral notes. Colombian coffees lean toward caramel and mild acidity. Honduran coffees often show stone fruit and dark chocolate.
